I provide counseling and psychotherapeutic services to adults, adolescents and couples affected by depression, anxiety, relational difficulties, addictions and other conditions. Therapy focuses on ways in which maladaptive behavior, attitudes, beliefs and values interfere with optimal emotional functioning. Research has shown that therapy can be as effective as medication in treating many common behavioral and psychological issues.

I provide problem-focused, research-based therapeutic interventions that can produce rapid improvement in your symptoms as well as a marked reduction in the recurrence of these symptoms.

Therapy can help you recognize and alter problematic patterns of thinking, feeling and behavior.

  • I help my clients gain insight into problematic patterns of thinking and behaving.
  • Therapy is always focused on the resolution of current, specific problems.

Specific Treatment Interventions

Adolescent Treatment - Adolescent Treatment is designed specifically for those between the ages of 13 and 18. Adolescent treatment is essentially family treatment - where parents are intimately involved in treatment process and are kept informed of their child's progress by regular involvement in counseling sessions

Alternative Pain Management Strategies - Alternative Pain Management Strategies involve the use of various behavioral and lifestyle changes to help in the management of chronic pain. Weight loss through skillful nutrition and exercise and the development of increased flexibility and resilience can help a chronic pain sufferer to reduce pain and rely less, or not at all, on pain-relieving medications. Mind/body therapies and mindfulness practice, through yoga, meditation and tai chi can actually alter the way a person experiences pain, leaving them better equipped to manage chronic pain.

Anger Management Therapy - I offer therapy specifically aimed at helping a person to more adaptively handle their anger. Anger management strategies include relaxation techniques, cognitive restructuring, problem-solving and improved communication strategies.

Co-Dependency Treatment - Treatment aimed at helping the co-dependent person to develop firmer boundaries in their relationships with others - especially significant others. Family and couples counseling and attending self-help groups like CoDA (Co-Dependents Anonymous), AlAnon and ACoA (Adult Children of Alcoholics) is recommended for maintaining ongoing recovery.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT engages clients on a thinking level and helps them better understand the links between environmental stimuli, their behavioral response to these stimuli and the consequences of their behavioral response by using what is called the ABC Triangle. In this construction, "A" equals the actuating event (like a person pushing in line ahead of you), "B" equals behavior (shoving or punching the person) and "C" equals consequences of the behavior (getting arrested, legal problems, legal expenses, embarrassment, etc.)

Executive/Professional Treatment - I offer Executive/Professional treatment. Treatment designed to be responsive to the special treatment needs of doctors, lawyers and other professionals and executives. Clients have ready access to recovering doctors, lawyers and other professionals who can consult with professional/executive clients. Treatment also focuses on helping professionals and executives manage the intense professional and social pressure that may be present in their lives.

Family Therapy - I offer family therapy where two or more members of a family participate simultaneously in treatment with the aim of achieving healthier communication and better interaction within the family.

Grief Counseling - Grief Counseling describes any counseling or psychotherapy targeted at helping a patient become more adaptive in negotiating the grief process. The process of grieving was described by Swiss-American psychiatrist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross who, in her book Death and Dying (1969) identified five distinct stages in the grief process.

LGBT-Focused Treatment - I offer counseling that is specifically focused on the special needs of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender clients with a focus on building a safe, supportive and accepting relationship.

Meditation - Meditation is an ancient spiritual practice that can help to still the mind. It can be quite helpful in anxiety management, anger reduction and trauma therapy.

Men Only - I offer counseling for men to address challenges they experience in developing a clear, well-defined sense of being a mature, well-balanced man in today's society. Some clients are referred to the men-only self-help group ManKind Project®.

Older Adult Focused Treatment - I offer older adult focused treatment that caters to the special needs of older adults, and offers them support in negotiating the emotional, cognitive social challenges of aging.

Psycho-Educational Activities - I offer psycho-education as a support to the counseling process by providing clients with information on the disorders from which they suffer as well as any maladaptive defense mechanisms that might prevent them from getting the most out of treatment. Clients who are in what is called a "pre-contemplative" stage of change - one in which they are not yet motivated to get well, often benefit from psycho-education. Pre-contemplative clients often find psycho-education less threatening than other forms of therapy.

Trauma Therapy - I offer trauma therapy that focuses on helping clients to heal from a variety of traumatic experiences. It is based on the creation of an environment of safety and support in which the trauma survivor can tell his or her story of trauma.

Young Adult Focus - I offer treatment specifically designed for patients aged 18-24. These young adults often need especially strong social support since their peers are less likely to support abstinence from mood-altering substances and other healthy behaviors.
